Best Gifts for Rosh Hashanah
The Jewish New Year, or Rosh Hashanah in Hebrew, is the celebration of the day on which the first human beings, Adam and Eve, were created. Jewish people will spend time praying for a good year and spending time with friends and family.
As with many Jewish festivals, there are certain foods that are traditional to eat as a symbol of something. Here are some examples:
Rosh Hashanah Apple and honey
Possibly the most well known symbol of Rosh Hashanah, apple and honey are there to represent wishes for a sweet new year. However, there are many fruits that are sweet – why the apple specifically?
According to some commentaries on the Bible, the Garden of Eden, G-d’s paradise, smells like apples. We also know that Adam and Eve, the man and woman created on this day, were guilty of eating fruit from the Tree of Knowledge in the Garden of Eden, which many believe to have been an apple.
Once a year we bring out our very special dried apple rings. The soft sweetness of the apple means its usually first to disappear from the tray! Speaking of the tray, we also bring out our apple shaped wooden tray for this special occasion. This bespoke, artisanal tray can be washed and reused for serving just about anything.
Rosh Hashanah Dates
Dates are also recognised for their intense sweetness, another symbol of hopes for a good year. There are many people who prefer to use date honey over honey from bees, especially for those who are vegan.
However, there is another symbolic element to dates. The Hebrew word for date is ‘tam’ which means ‘end’. Jewish people eat dates to signify their hope to end all pain, suffering and fighting amongst peoples.
The only thing they still might fight over is who gets the last medjool date!
Happy Sweet New Year – Rosh Hashanah
In general, the Jewish population will indulge in great feasts and sweet treats of the New Year period. And if you know us by now, you know what that means… chocolate!
Our wooden scrolls are filled with the finest covered dried fruit that remind us of the scrolls of ancient text of Jewish lore. Timeless, elegant and full of goodness. Apricot, mango, orange and brazil nuts covered in chocolate can transport you anywhere with just one bite.
We’re also slightly obsessed with our chocolate bark; five bars of creamy milk chocolate studded with dried fruit, rose petals and hazelnuts, pistachio croquant and juicy blueberries. Normally these are £5.00 each but our special Rosh Hashanah deal offers you FIVE chocolate barks, plus a tray of dried apple and honey for only £21.50! A most enticing deal…
And if you simply can’t decide what to get, we also have hamper options that contain a bit of everything, so there will be something for all the family to enjoy.
Charity partnerships
A huge element of the Jewish New Year celebrations include giving money to charity, as a good omen for the year ahead. We are proud to be supporting two incredible charities this year.
Evie’s Night Owls supports seriously ill children with round-the-clock care so that their parents can get some respite. The founders Sam and Lee Bladon work tirelessly to help parents get some relief from the demands of looking after children with severe medical conditions. They themselves were 24/7 carers for their daughter Evie, who suffered from severe brain damage and multiple health issues. Their work to help families going through a similar situation is their legacy to Evie, who unfortunately passed away.
Jewish Women’s Aid are another extremely important charity. They support women and children who have been affected by domestic violence and sexual abuse. Amongst many services, they offer therapy for people affected by many forms of abuse, training programmes for community professionals and education on healthy relationships to schools. They have supported thousands of women and children and are increasing year on year.
