Pancake Day
Pancake Day
On 1st March the event celebrated internationally as ‘Pancake Day’ will take place. Unlike many modern ‘Hallmark’ holidays, Pancake Day actually has a lot of historical significance, and meaning behind it.
The origins of Pancake Day are as follows. In around 1000 AD, the first mentions of a day in the Christian calendar for preparation for Lent are found. This day is known as Shrove Tuesday, and you may still see this name in your calendars today.
It is the last day to repent before Ash Wednesday, which is when Lent begins. During this time, fatty foods like eggs, milk and sugar are discouraged, which is why they were used up on this day. And of course, these happen to be the staple ingredients in pancakes!
These ingredients have some symbolic significance as well. Eggs symbolise creation; flour is the staff of life; salt represents wholesomeness and milk represents purity.
This festival is called by another name in America and other countries, which may sound familiar; Mardi Gras.
Apart from eating pancakes, there were a number of traditions that used to take place on this day, including pancake races, football matches and skipping.
