Nut Brittle: A Tempting Feast
Out of all confections, nut brittle has the craziest history of how it came into existence. Unlike other confections that are usually soft, nut brittle, as its name suggests is brittle. It is composed of sugar candy embedded with nuts, such as peanuts, almonds, pecans, etc.
The flat pieces of nut brittle are usually thin, less than a centimeter. Do you know? Peanut brittle gained popularity in the U.S. as a fund-raising tool long before chocolate candy took over. Well, there’s a lot to know about this tempting flavored confection. Just dive in!
Nut Brittle. A Glimpse into the Past Times
It is quite interesting to know that the 26th of January is being celebrated as a national peanut brittle day. The birth of this confection was actually an accident. Don’t you know? Well, it all begins around 1890 when a southern woman happened to create nut brittle by mistake.
She was about to make taffy but instead of adding cream of tartar she added baking soda and continued cooking. There you go! A crunchy chewy taffy came into existence. What’s more exciting here is; that the tale of nut brittle doesn’t end here. There is another very popular one; the story of the Tony Beaver.
Fable of Tony Beaver
Tony Beaver, though a fable hero had a huge supply of large-sized peanuts. As he was a giant lumberjack in the village where he lived, he happened to come to the rescue when a massive rainstorm hits that village. What he did was; dumped his jumbo-sized peanuts and molasses in the rising river and dammed it up.
The flood stops but unfortunately blocked their source of drinking water too. They then started breaking away the hardened mass. Upon tasting that mass, they realized that a delicious recipe has just been born and is worth trying again. After all, it tasted quite wonderful.
