A widower became poor while trying to raise his three daughters alone. Without any money for a dowry, women could not marry and at the time, there were no other options for women. Saint Nicholas, (or Santa Claus as many may know him) heard of this struggling family and wanted to help them. He snuck up onto their roof and dropped bags of gold down the family’s chimney. One fell into a stocking there, where it was found. It was this act of kindness that led Saint Nick to become the patron saint of children. The first recorded stocking fillers.
