Veganuary 2022

Veganuary 2022

Veganuary At an estimate, around 2 million people in the UK are taking on Veganuary. The challenge not to consume any animal products for the entire month of January. Apparently, around 8% of the UK only eat plant based food – that’s quite a lot of people when you add the numbers up!

We’ve spoken quite a lot on the blog about why people might choose to follow a vegan lifestyle. But what are the effects of making this choice?

Health Benefits to Veganuary

Studies have shown that eating a plant based diet is very beneficial for one’s health. Scientists in Taiwan have worked out that people who did not animal products went to the doctor much less than those who did. Their spending on doctors fees was 15% lower – which means if everyone in the UK cut out meat from their diets, we could save £30 billion a year on healthcare.

A vegan diet reduces the risks of heart disease, high cholesterol, even chances of cancer.

The Environment Benefits to Veganuary

A vegetarian (and by association, vegan) diet sees a significant reduction in carbon emissions – as much as 2.5 times less than a non-vegetarian. According to calculations on carbon footprint calculators, the annual carbon saving of two adults becoming vegan is 2,440 kg of carbon dioxide. That’s the same amount of carbon produced from running a car for 6,000 miles!

As well as reducing carbon dioxide and other greenhouse gases, meat consumption also uses up a lot of water. Moving away from meat consumption, including chicken, saves thousands of litres of water, a vital resource required in many third world countries. A shocking example – it apparently takes 4300 litres of water per kilogram to produce chicken for eating. (https://waterfootprint.org/en/resources/interactive-tools/product-gallery/).

The Economy Benefits to Veganuary

The National Academy of Sciences in America say that if everyone in the United States went vegan, they could feed an additional 350 million people. This is because the animals we eat, also need to eat food! The land that they graze on could be used to plant food for humans, effectively cutting out the animals in the middle, and would actually feed more humans as a result. They predict a total saving of $250 billion a year if the whole country went vegan.
