This week we got some incredibly exciting news – we received another Great Taste Award, for our glace fruit! These also won in 2018 and we were so pleased that they have received recognition again in 2021. Over the years, our glace fruit has been one of the most popular products in our inventory and we often sell out due to such high demand!

The judges of Great Taste said that our glace fruit are ‘beautifully even slices of citrus, evenly glazed’ and that ‘crystallisation was at just the right level so that you could still taste the citrus and it was not taken over by the sugar’. They also recommended that people use these glace fruit to decorate their cakes, due to their ‘bright, vibrant colours’.

About our Award winning Glace Fruit

We searched for many years in pursuit of award-winning glace fruit, travelling to trade exhibitions in Europe and Asia. Our brief was to find a wide variety of good quality fruits with a range of contrasting flavours and textures.

People have been using sugar or honey as a natural preservative since the ancient cultures of China and Mesopotamia. During the 11th century, sugar was only affordable to Kings, Sovereigns and Emperors. As the cost of sugar fell during the 14th century, the preserving of natural fruit into glacé fruit or pate de fruit increased. However, they were still a luxury sweetmeat favoured by the nobility and gentry. It took a further 400 years to the end of the 18th century for sugar to be affordable to the masses.

In doing research, I did discover a different explanation for the increase in production of glace fruit. In Provence in the 1600s, people were very poor and even though fruit grew in abundance, they could not manage to use or sell it all, and much of it was going to waste. Nostradamus, a famous French astrologer, who was known for making prophecies, many of which have come to pass, was born and lived in this area. He did lots of astrology work for rich clients, including the Medici family (and if you watched the TV show, you’ll actually see glace fruit in many of the shots) but he also wrote books with recipes for different types of cosmetics and preserves. It was allegedly he who came up with the idea to use sugar to preserve the excess fruit so it would not be wasted.
