International Women’s Day
International Women’s Day
As described by their website … International Woman’s Day is powered by the collective efforts of all.
But what is International Women’s Day?
It is celebrated annually on 8th March. Dedicated to encouraging all people to actively choose to “celebrate women’s achievements, raise awareness about women’s equality, lobby for accelerated gender parity and fundraise for female-focused charities,” ‘as stated on the International Women’s Day website.
What is the history of International Women’s Day?
Introduced in the early 1900s. In 1908 women begun campaigning for greater equality and less harsh working conditions. In 1911 the first gathering occurred in New York. 15.000 women took to the streets demanding shorter working hours, better (not equal) pay and voting rights.
However, the 2001 launch of the International Women’s Day website stirred up support and re-energize efforts. For the first time, women from around the world were able to connect in one virtual place.
What colours represent this movement?
Purple, green and white. Purple to signify justice and dignity, green to represent hope and white for purity. These colours were first used by the Women’s Social and Political Union in the UK, founded in 1903 by Emily Pankhurst.
What’s this year’s theme?
The campaign theme for International Women’s Day 2021 is ‘Choose To Challenge‘. You are being called on to think critically about your thoughts and actions. Think of how to promote gender inequality better whilst celebrating women’s achievements. A challenging world is an awake world. And from challenge comes change.
Who can support?
International Women’s Day is not a country, group, nor organization specific. No one government, NGO, charity, corporation, academic institution, women’s network, or media hub is solely responsible for International Women’s Day. The day belongs to all groups collectively everywhere. So, support and make a positive difference for women.
What can I do to mark International Women’s Day?
The easiest way is to acknowledge the need for worldwide awareness of women, is through meaningful conversations, resources and activities.
On 8th March wear something purple, green or white. And fill your mind with some inspirational feminist quotes that remind you of how incredible women are.
Or, if you want to get more involved, host an event, run a campaign, launching an initiative and encourage others to donate to a female-focused charity. Doing what you can to make a positive difference today and every day will make a difference to the world’s women.
What makes this day successful?
Based on a foundation of trust and appreciation. Planned worldwide partnerships that identify, celebrate and increase the awareness of women’s achievements—Group global actions with shared ownership and purpose for tackling conscious or subconscious gender bias.
Does it only last for one day?
Every day is a great day to celebrate positive changes for women and the women who have made that possible. Those whose actions have impacted and touched your life. You might not know them or have heard of them, but they are out there campaigning for you, your children and your children’s children.
According to the World Economic Forum, women will not get equality between the genders for another hundred years. There’s urgent work to do – and we can all play a part.
