Global Recycling Day
Global Recycling Day
Why do we need Global Recycling Day?
We need Global Recycling Day to bring our awareness to the fact that global temperatures have significantly risen over the past ten years. Consequently, we are facing a climate change of unmatched proportions. If we don’t make significant and rapid changes to our lifestyles, the world’s temperature will continue to rise; ice caps will melt, a fire will spread rapidly through continents destroying forests and all that live in them. Governments, economists and social activists agree that under these conditions.
Poverty will increase globally.
Immigration will increase from displaced communities.
Job losses throughout the world.
Waste mountains will increase.
The disappearance of natural habits.
Recycling is such an important issue that the United Nations has generated Sustainable Development Goals up to 2030 as part of its global green agenda.
What is Global Recycling Day?
Global recycling day was created in 2018 by The Global Recycling Foundation. It has three main aims. Firstly, to bring attention to world leaders that recycling is an important global issue. Secondly, to preserve the worlds natural resources by helping to secure the future of our planet.
Thirdly, it hopes to unite countries and nurture the idea of putting the planets limited resources first. As well as a long-term vision to foster an international joined-up approach to recycling.
What can you do for Global Recycling Day?
Everybody needs to think about the resources of the world and not waste our precious resources. We need to take a more holistic approach to our unwanted products, and GRD is the perfect day to begin. An excellent way to start is to commit to making a small daily change in your life by:
Start seeing unwanted products as potential recycling opportunities.
Stop using single-use items and non-recyclable goods.
Be more aware and take better care of our society.
Make intelligent decisions regarding recycling and upcycling.
Think resource, not waste – real value and repurpose.
What we can all do?
Recycling is an essential part of our future. By educating our children, ourselves, our communities to change our behaviour, we will help undo some of the environmental damage already done and help slow it down. There is no doubt that recycling is on the front line in the war to save our planet and humanity’s future. The theme for Global Recycling Day 2021 is #RecyclingHeroes.
They will recognise the people, places and activities that showcase the vital role recycling plays in contributing to an environmentally stable planet and a greener future that will benefit all.
What do we do at Walnut Tree for Global Recycling Day and 364 other days?
We recycle and upcycle our waste products. How? 95% of our orders big or small were being delivered in cardboard boxes. I was having issues because we were discarding boxes from delivered goods whilst simultaneously buying boxes to send out goods. I decided this need to stop.
There are approx. three different sized boxes. It was an easy decision, use all our small boxes, to dispatch internet orders. The large boxes could be and are collected by local garages and used to protect their floors whilst servicing a car. And that left the medium-sized boxes, which made up the bulk of the waste.
I thought long and hard and then had a eureka moment. If our main supplier used a standard-sized box, once empty, we could reuse it.
The next challenge was to work out the most efficient multi-functioning box size. It needed to be packed with one sized gift trays, repacked with other sized trays, and efficiently loaded into a container or onto a pallet.
After much trial and error, cutting and sticking I constructed a box that I thought and prayed would work. I’m pleased to say that the new sized boxes are easy to handle, stack beautifully and work for both good-in and goods-out.
Each time we reuse a box, we smile. We HAVE made a difference, and all it took was some thought. NB we also upcycle our waste packing film, ribbon and damaged packaging.
